INEC Plans to Mobilize More Than 35,000 Personnel for Upcoming Rerun and By-Elections
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) plans
to deploy approximately 35,000 temporary staff for the upcoming rerun and
by-elections on February 3, as reported by Sunday PUNCH.
These elections are set to take place across 8,890 polling
units, as indicated in a document shared by INEC on its X handle. Of these,
by-elections will occur in 4,294 polling units across nine states, while reruns
will be conducted in 4,596 units.
Each of the 8,890 polling units will have one presiding
officer and three assistant presiding officers, totaling 35,560 ad-hoc staff.
Additionally, Supervisory Presiding Officers will be assigned to various units.
While INEC has opened its portal for observers and media
organizations to register, it has not yet opened applications for ad-hoc staff
for these elections.
On Wednesday, INEC released the final list and details of
candidates for the upcoming by-elections in certain parts of the country. This
includes the list and personal particulars of candidates for rerun elections
scheduled for February 3, 2024, which were published prior to the 2023 general
elections.
The by-elections will cover two senatorial districts, four
federal constituencies, and three state constituencies. Court-ordered rerun
elections are also set for 12 federal constituencies. Specifically, senatorial
elections will be held in Yobe East and Plateau Central due to court orders.
State-level elections are slated in Adamawa, Akwa Ibom,
Bauchi, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Enugu, Kaduna, Kano, Nasarawa, Niger, Oyo,
Sokoto, Zamfara, Benue, and Borno states to fill various vacant positions.
