The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Joe Ajaero, expressed concerns regarding the ongoing inflation and its impact on Nigerian workers.
He mentioned that organized labor may advocate for a new minimum wage of up to N1 million due to the rising cost of living under President Bola Tinubu's administration, particularly due to the removal of fuel subsidy and other policies. Ajaero emphasized that the demand for a higher minimum wage would be influenced by factors such as currency depreciation and inflation.
He highlighted the necessity for the government to consider the current economic conditions, including the high prices of essential commodities like rice and corn. Ajaero also criticized the delay in setting up a committee to negotiate the new minimum wage, questioning the government's commitment to the process, especially considering the composition of the committee.
Both the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress issued a 14-day strike notice to the Federal Government, citing frustration over its failure to implement a previous agreement aimed at mitigating the effects of increased petrol prices and currency devaluation.
The unions demanded government action within the specified timeframe, starting from Friday, February 9, 2024.
