The Ovie of Ewu Kingdom in the Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State, Clement Ikolo, Urhukpe 1, has voluntarily surrendered to the police amidst allegations linking him and seven others to the killing of military personnel in his region.
The Defence Headquarters had announced their wanted status in connection to the incident where officers and soldiers from the 181 Amphibious Battalion were attacked by angry youths during a peacekeeping mission in the Okuama community on March 14, 2024.
This tragic event is rooted in a long-standing land dispute between the Okuama and Okoloba communities dating back to 2023.
Initially taken aback by being listed among the wanted individuals, the monarch refuted any involvement through a video statement, emphasizing his strong Catholic and Christian beliefs that preclude such actions.
However, reports indicate that he has since surrendered himself at the state police command, arriving on Thursday evening and presenting himself to Commissioner of Police Olufemi Abaniwonda.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, confirmed this development.
Before his surrender, the monarch maintained his innocence to the press, denying any wrongdoing related to the accusations.
In response to these events, the Nigerian military has hinted at the possibility of offering rewards for information leading to the apprehension of suspects tied to the killings.
The funeral services for the deceased soldiers were conducted on Wednesday at the National Military Cemetery in Abuja.
Other individuals named as wanted in connection to the incident include Prof.
Ekpekpo Arthur, Andaowei Dennis Bakriri, Akevwru Daniel
Omotegbo (also known as AMAGBEN), Akata Malawa David, Sinclear Oliki, Reuben
Baru, and Igoli Ebi.
