Court Sentences Man to Death by Hanging for Killing his Brother in Ekiti
An individual named Arowolo Sunday, aged 42, has been
sentenced to capital punishment through hanging by the Ekiti State High Court
in Ado Ekiti. This sentence comes as a consequence of his conviction for
murdering his half-brother.
Sunday was formally charged with murder on November 5, 2021,
by Justice Adeniyi Familoni. The incident occurred on April 9, 2021, in
Ikogosi, where he was found guilty of killing Arowolo Dare, an act that
breaches Section 391 (1) of the Criminal Code Law of Ekiti State, established
in 2012.
The victim's 15-year-old son provided a harrowing account of
the murder. He recounted that while returning from the farm, his father was
attacked by Sunday. The assailant used an iron trap and a wooden pestle to
inflict fatal injuries on the victim, leaving him in a critical state. Despite
the son's attempts to seek help, the community members were too intimidated to
intervene. The victim was eventually transported to a hospital but succumbed to
his injuries.
The prosecutor, Oluwaseun Olasanmi, substantiated the
charges with the testimony of seven witnesses and evidence including the
defendant's statement, photographs of the deceased, and a death report.
The defense, represented by counsel and two witnesses,
failed to sway the judgement. Justice Familoni declared that the prosecution
had convincingly established the murder charge beyond a reasonable doubt. He
therefore found Arowolo Sunday guilty and sentenced him to death by hanging,
invoking a plea for divine mercy on his soul.
