NASU Strike Ground Activities at UNIJOS, SSANU

Activities at the University of Jos in Plateau State came to a halt as members of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) initiated a seven-day strike. The university gates were closed, causing inconvenience to staff and students attempting to enter.

Last Monday, SSANU and NASU announced a warning strike lasting seven days. This decision stemmed from the Federal Government's withholding of four months' salaries following the 2022 nationwide strike.

Despite SSANU and NASU's readiness for a nationwide strike, Education Minister Prof. Tahir Mamman claimed ignorance of their plans. Nevertheless, a joint letter from SSANU and NASU to the University Vice Chancellor, signed by NASU's branch chairman Monday Danjuma Kpaji and SSANU's Anthony T. Joro, outlined the seven-day strike as directed by their national secretariat.

The strike, effective from March 18 to March 24, 2024, was communicated to university authorities and copied to the Plateau State Commissioner of Police and the Director of State Services. Similar strikes were observed at the University of Ilorin by SSANU and NASU members in line with the unions' national directives.
