The Nigeria Labour Congress has rejected Julius Abure's re-election as the Labour Party's National Chairman, declaring that they will not recognize him in any capacity.
Abure was re-elected during the party's national convention held in Nnewi, Anambra State, where all members of the National Working Committee were also re-elected, leaving vacant slots for representatives from the NLC and the Trade Union Congress.
The NLC spokesperson, Benson Upah, denounced the convention as a sham and stated that the NLC will not support the party under Abure's leadership, calling his re-election an illegal and meaningless act of impunity.
Regarding their next steps, the NLC's head of information indicated a wait-and-see approach.
The convention was marred by tensions, with five individuals reportedly apprehended for attempting to cause trouble and distribute inflammatory material critical of the party leadership.
These individuals were handed over to the police for questioning.
In a statement jointly signed by Abure and the party's National Secretary, Umar Farouk, it was announced that Peter Obi and Dr. Alex Otti have been cleared to run as the party's presidential and gubernatorial candidates, respectively, in 2027.

Tinubu to address the rising insecurity in Kaduna and other northern states,
supporting the restructuring of the security architecture and advocating for
decentralization of policing to include regional, state, and local levels.
