Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde asserted that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) faced defeat in the 2020 Ondo State Governorship election primarily due to internal disunity and factionalism within the party. The upcoming Ondo State Governorship election, slated for November 16, 2024, has prompted the party to initiate its preparations.
The PDP has scheduled its congress for Thursday, April 25, 2024, to select its gubernatorial candidate. The process involves the sale of expression of interest, nomination forms, and Ad-hoc forms from March 7 to March 21, with a submission deadline of March 25.
Speaking at an interactive meeting between key stakeholders from Ondo State and the National Working Committee at the PDP national headquarters in Abuja, Governor Makinde emphasized the importance of unity within the party. He acknowledged the lessons learned from the 2020 election, emphasizing that while success can be celebrated collectively, failure poses challenges that must be addressed together.
Makinde declared that the party's ticket for the upcoming election would not be handed over easily, indicating a competitive selection process among all aspirants. He underscored the need for unity among party members to secure victory.
Addressing the attendees, acting National Chairman of the PDP, Umar Damagum, urged gubernatorial aspirants to conduct their campaigns prudently. He emphasized that only one candidate would emerge from the primaries, urging caution and cooperation among contenders.
Discussions during the meeting centered on the mode of primaries, consensus building, and zoning. Notable figures present included former Ondo State Governor Olusegun Mimiko, gubernatorial candidate Eyitayo Jegede, PDP State Acting Chairman Tola Alabere, and Otunba Bamidele Akingboye.
