Bola Tinubu, the President, has instructed the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and the Director General of the Department of State Service, Yusuf Bichi, to collaborate with governors in tackling the issue of food hoarding. This directive came after a meeting with state governors in Abuja to address the ongoing food crisis in the country.
The recent protests in Niger State against the soaring prices of food items, which many attribute to hoarding by intermediaries, highlight the seriousness of the situation. In response, the government of Kano State took action by seizing 10 warehouses reportedly involved in hoarding food items.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, stated that Tinubu tasked these security officials with coordinating efforts with state governors to address the hoarding issue. He emphasized the urgency of releasing food supplies to the public to stabilize prices and ensure food security for Nigerians. The collaboration between security agencies and governors aims to put an end to this practice.
Regarding the possibility of importing food to alleviate the rising costs, Idris stated that such measures are unnecessary. He expressed confidence in Nigeria's ability to feed itself and even become a net exporter of food items. Idris stressed that the current challenges are temporary and reassured that the country's food production capabilities remain strong.
