Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has suggested that Nigeria seek assistance from Zimbabwe to address its current rampant inflation. Highlighting Zimbabwe's recent successful resolution of a similar economic crisis, Obasanjo believes that Zimbabwe can offer valuable insights to Nigeria.
Nigeria is currently facing an inflation rate of 29.9 percent, leading to widespread protests due to the soaring cost of living. Obasanjo made these remarks during a youth leadership symposium held at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta, marking his 87th birthday.
The event, organized by the Centre for Human Security and Dialogue in collaboration with the Institute for African Culture and International Understanding, focused on the theme of conflict prevention in Africa.
Obasanjo emphasized the importance of confronting challenges head-on and learning from past experiences to overcome them. He urged Nigerians not to despair in tough times but to seek solutions and draw inspiration from others who have faced similar difficulties.
Additionally, Obasanjo advocated for dialogue as the key to resolving conflicts on the African continent, emphasizing the need to instill a culture of peace and security in young people.
He referenced biblical figures like Esther and Joseph as examples of individuals who contributed to peace and stability in their communities. Obasanjo stressed the importance of nurturing positive attributes like kindness, mercy, and forgiveness among the youth to promote peace and discourage violence.
The coordinator of the symposium, Prof Peter Okebukola, emphasized the significance of involving young people in meaningful ways to drive positive change in society.
The event aimed to empower West African
youths to become catalysts for peace and development through targeted
interventions and international collaboration.
